This is a modification of massage techniques in order to work safely with the effects of cancer and its treatment. It can be done on those in active treatment, recovery or survivorship. Many cancer treatments require immediate as well as long term massage modifications.

A massage therapist trained in oncology massage will keep in mind clinical considerations of the nature of cancer and also the side effects of cancer treatments resulting from medications, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Adaptations will be done keeping in mind peripheral neuropathy, fatigue, low blood cell count, bone pain, lymphedema, removal of lymph nodes, medical devices, etc. to mention a few. These clinical considerations can and will regularly change depending on the stage of the treatment. It is therefore essential on a client's part to provide as much detailed information as possible about their health history. Please ask for and complete a separate form (in addition to the regular form) for oncology massage.

At Santulan, client’s comfort comes first. The massage table is fully adjustable in height and tilt and has cut-outs for the breast tissue so that no pressure is felt in the upper chest cavity. This also helps those with ports to not cause any discomfort while lying face down.

MFR is a safe, gentle & an effective way to release the adhesions in the muscles & connective tissue. The range of motion is increased, area worked on feels looser. Stretch reflex in muscles is triggered causing tight, contracted muscles to become looser. It is quite possible that the client will feel a difference for the better right away. An excellent benefit for oncology & any post-surgical restrictions, even if from long ago.

Lymphatic drainage is not a massage but a manual treatment that can be done regionally to help those with edema anywhere in the body, pre & post surgery, jump start weight loss, reduce facial congestion, double chin & more!

Post Surgical Lymphatics can be done both before surgery to help remove excess fluids and toxins from the body, to help prep the body for faster healing & after surgery to reduce edema, swelling & inflammation. It is most commonly requested for liposuction, breast surgery: lift, enhancement or reduction, abdominoplasty, facial, knee, radiation or surgery related to cancer treatment. It is best to have physician’s clearance for such work since multiple sessions will be required. The number of sessions will be determined by the therapist after treating at the first session as it is necessary to touch, feel & palpate the area.
Please understand that it typically takes 4-6 months for post surgical healing to happen. Lymphatic sessions help to bring down the initial swelling so that it reduces and is brought under control. This aids in speeding up your recovery.

Medi-cupping is sometimes included, depending on the case. It is a vacuum based cupping device, which will not leave bruise-like marks on the body. It helps flush lymph much faster and reduce muscle adhesions, scar tissue and supports weight loss. Requires 2-3 sessions per week for optimum results. The rate mentioned is exclusively for lymphatic drainage only.

Lymphatic Flush is now offered for those seeking to jump-start their lymph drainage so that congested areas in the body can be addressed. These areas can include abdomen, thighs, arms, face & neck. This is a hands on technique that is done in 3 sessions and requires a weekly commitment in order to see results. Each session builds on the previous one. Issues like sinus congestion, headaches, bloat, constipation, cold and flu-like symptoms, cramping, stiffness and more can be addressed by flushing excess lymph out of the affected areas. The rate is $115/60mins.

Please note the techniques used here is different from those applied for post-surgical, oncology & other medical issues.

This session will help flush lymph, drain cysts, reduce pain in the pectorals, before & after breast surgery- whether reduction, augmentation or reconstruction. You will be undraped from waist up. Learn how to examine visually, palpation techniques to stimulate tissue & drain excess fluids with a simple 3 step protocol which can be done daily anywhere. At Santulan, prenatal massage is advised only from the 2nd trimester onwards. It is advised that the client get a no objection letter from their doctor in order to receive a massage especially for risks like gestational diabetes, varicose veins & very low or high blood pressure.

Post natal massage is also offered to help the new mommy relieve discomfort in areas of concern. Abdominal massage is included and does require a clearance note from the physician.

Just as there are reflex points on the feet that correspond with various organs and body parts, similarly there are points on the face. This is a modality to help treat the whole body by treating the face.
Gentle yet firm strokes are used to massage the face first to bring about blood flow to the area while stimulating the reflex points. Next is facial reflexology, acupressure & some Gua Sha, if needed. Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese healing technique that scrapes gently at skin using a special tool to facilitate clearing of stagnant energy, thereby improving circulation. Facial cupping is done either manually using cups or with the aid of Medi-cupping device. The skin is gently lifted by the negative pressure caused by the suction of the cup against the skin, causing the skin’s layers to separate which in turn allows blood & lymph to flow better, increasing the skin tone. Facial cupping is recommended for reducing double chin, firming up jawline, bags around the eyes and even forehead or even to reduce chronic or seasonal sinus congestion.
